Is spring finally here?
After such a long and cold winter, I have really been looking forward to spring, sunshine, warmth. The first day of spring, March 21, left a lot to be desired. Mother Nature dumped 12 inches of snow on us. Only a few days ago there was a threat of frost. Today, May 4th, I think I can finally say that spring is finally here.
The greenhouse furnace will be in need of an overhaul after the spring workout, but it certainly did it’s job. There are over 55 different varieties of plants in our greenhouses at this time. We have begun to transplant sunflowers, celosia, dahlias and many other items into our high tunnels. Our workload is never ending at this time of the season.
Our tunneled Italian Ranunculus, had to deal with tempertures from zero to those 80 degree days that we had in February. All that time with John’s watchful eyes willing them to make it through another Pennsylvania winter. He did just that. This years ranuculus crop is absolutely stunning!
The first of our peonies are beginning to bloom. By Mother’s Day, Red Charm and Coral Charm peonies will be gracing dinner tables up and down the east coast. The blooms on these are big and beautiful! With many more varieties following shortly behind.
Spring means something different to everyone. To me, it means the beginnng of another season of exceptional, local flowers.
